Scratchers, Shortcuts, and the Death of Professional Tattooing

In the age of online tutorials, cheap tattoo kits, and instant social media fame, more aspiring tattooists are skipping the traditional apprenticeship route. On the surface, it might seem like a faster, easier way to start earning money. But in reality, bypassing an apprenticeship can cripple your career before it even begins—and put your clients’ health at serious risk.

They watch a few YouTube videos. They order a chinese “tattoo kit” online. They practice on a friend’s leg in a kitchen with a cat walking across the table. Then, they have the nerve to call themselves “tattoo artists.”

These are the scratchers—untrained, self-taught amateurs who skip the most important part of becoming a real tattooist: the apprenticeship. And they’re the fastest way to destroy your skin and the reputation of the tattoo industry.

What They Don’t Tell You About Skipping an Apprenticeship

An apprenticeship isn’t just “old-school gatekeeping.” It’s there to protect clients and teach future artists how to tattoo safely.

When you bypass that training, here’s what you’re skipping:

  • Sterilization protocols – Without knowing how to prevent cross-contamination, every tattoo becomes a potential infection or disease transmission.
  • Skin science – Tattooing isn’t colouring in a book. Go too shallow and the ink fades. Go too deep and you cause blowouts, scarring, or permanent damage.
  • Equipment knowledge – A real artist knows how to tune machines, pick the right needles, and choose safe inks. Scratchers just hope for the best.
  • Design adaptation – Not every drawing works on skin. Without training, placements look awkward, and tattoos age badly.

The Damage They Cause

  • Clients’ Health – Bloodborne diseases, bacterial infections, and allergic reactions to cheap, unregulated inks.
  • Permanent Scarring – Overworked skin that even a cover-up can’t hide.
  • The Industry’s Reputation – Every botched tattoo from an amateur makes the public trust professionals less.

One infected, blown-out tattoo done in a filthy bedroom is all it takes for someone to decide never to get tattooed again. That hurts everyone—especially the real artists who work hard to do things right.

The Arrogance of the Shortcut

Skipping an apprenticeship is like skipping medical school but still performing surgery because you “have a steady hand.” Being good at drawing doesn’t make you a tattoo artist—just like being good at doodling doesn’t make you a heart surgeon.

The truth is simple:

  • If you care about the art, you’ll respect the process.
  • If you care about your clients, you’ll protect their health.
  • If you skip training, you’re just a scratcher with a machine, not an artist.

The Reality Check

A real apprenticeship takes patience, humility, and hard work. It means cleaning stations, learning skin, studying hygiene, and earning the trust of someone who’s mastered the craft. It’s not easy—but nothing worth doing ever is.

Every respected tattooist in the world started here. Every scratcher in the world avoided it—and left a trail of horror stories behind.

Bottom line: If you want to tattoo, do it right. If you want to skip the work, put the machine down. This industry doesn’t need more hacks with cheap gear and an Instagram page—it needs skilled artists who’ve earned the title.
